We Play Kids Our Own Age
Several games into the season and we have not won a game yet. We are a developing team and most (if not all) of the teams we play against play higher grade and age students. This one particular team we played today had a kid..#1 is what we will call him, who was in the 11th grade. He met the age limit to play, but he should be (and I believe he also) playing on high school varsity. #1 thought he was hot stuff for running up the score on a bunch of middle schoolers and our one 9th grader. Everytime the kid scored he would run down the court with a silly grin on his face as if he was thinking " I am MJ." Coaching for a Christain School the way we conduct ourselves is very important. The kids, understandably, were frustrated with the out come of the game. We told them at this point. "Dont foul too hard, but foul hard". That's at least what I told them. "If they push, push back", I said. The opposing coach sat on his bench smiling and joking around with his players. Up by at least 30, #1 felt even more cocky. His team would give him the ball to try and run up the score. The fact that he was still playing at this point of the game was a display of poor sportsmanship. At the end of the game the kids said " I'M NOT SHAKING THEIR HANDS", in which we repllied, "yes you will, be good sports, let us take care of the rest." As we finished shaking hands the head coach of our team went to talk to the head coach of the opposing team. I am unsure what was said, but I kow the point our coach wanted to make. That is poor sportsmanship and a pathetic display of it.
I kept saying to the kids, "don't worry about it, we play kids our own age", which I also said to the coach while he was laughing it up on the bench.
Understandbly frustrating for your team. I do not quite understand what part you play on this team, are you an assistant of sorts?
