The Parable of the Lost Son, what's it mean?

I came across this story in my english class. We had to read it and explain what happened and give our view about how the older son thought. Here is what I think..

Luke 15:11-32

New International Version (NIV)
The Parable of the Lost Son
11 Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. 12 The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them. 13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.
17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ 20 So he got up and went to his father.
“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.
21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.
25 “Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27 ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’
28 “The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’
31 “‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

Of course it is understandable where the older brother is coming from. But being the older brother he should know that his younger brother is not as matured as him. His father, like our heavenly father showed Grace and Love towards his son. For "he was lost and is found" When someone is "lost" in their faith, all of heaven rejoices when they are "found" and commit to having a personal relationship to Jesus Christ. The youngest son represents those who lose themselves or stray away or maybe even never known Christ, and his return and asking for forgivness represents what we as Christains should do and those who wish to start or have a relationship with God. The father rejoicing that his son has returned illustrates Christains when they return to Christ or repent and ask for forgiveness or get saved.
At least this is what I got, Let me know what you think!

#1 Dunker in the NBA, and here is why

Other than MJ, I have never seen a player who can sore over people with ease and slam it home like Vince Carter. at 6'6 220 lbs Vince is the closest to MJ I have seen (MJ at 6'6 about 200lbs at his prime) Vince is in his 13th seaon in the NBA and can still get up! With a Vertical Jump on 43 inches (about 3.583 feet) no wonder why Vince is still throwing down on people. In the 2000 Olympics Vince jumped over a 7'2 guy for a slam. Check out the video!

WE LOST, BUT IT FELT GOOD

Today our Middle School Boys basketball team played a team in New Port Richy, Fl. We lost by a dozen points, give or take, but one moment in the game made it less painful. With time running down we called a timeout. During this timeout one of the Refs came over and said, " the other team has a mentally handicap kid, if it's okay with you can we call a made up foul so he can shoot foul shots." Being down with only 8 minutes we allowed the request. The play started and shortly after here comes the call. Ref blows the whistle. " Foul on #10 against his own teamate #1, Two shots." If you know about basketball you will know why this is funny. Someone on the same team cannot foul another player on his team. So not only did the foul not count against us because none of our players actually commited a foul, but this kid would have the chance in the spotlight. He line up, bounces the ball a couple of times, and swish! Makes his first foul shot. Everyone in the place clapped and cheared. He missed his second foul shot and the other team recovered the ball and held it until the clock ran out.

Talk Of The Town

I'm not going to say a whole lot about this guy. Anyone who is a basketball fan and somewhat keeps up with pro basketball has heard of Jeremy Lin. Lin who receiving no athletic scholorsip offers out of high school and being  undrafted out of college, the Harvard University graduate reached a partially guaranteed contract deal with his hometown Golden State Worriers.Lin bounced around the NBA Development Leauge. Once Lin got invited to a team he was fighting for a shot. Most of the time fighting for the back up or back ups back up on the roster.  Lin announces his christianity openly which makes im a good player to me. Here are some videos of Lin playing. You can see why the hype has brewed about this young player.

Using God's Gift in any situation( or sport)

Playing basketball and getting to coach it has left opportunities to have an impact on others. Though I am not the ideal christain and I certainly fall short of the glory of God (as we all do..I have a saying "we all fall short..some just fall a little shorter") but it is easy to use our talents and gifts to glorify and exemplify God and his love. Sadly it has taken me about 5 years to use my love of basketball as a tool for God. My first year out of High School I had ( and currently have) the opportunity to assist coaching for a christain middle school basketball team. I knew I would have to watch myself and not fall back on bad habits because I was dealing with kids who I know learn about and know Christ. This had me thinking. What is so different about these kids and any other kids I play against? I should be setting and example nomatter who I play against or deal with. But coaching these kids has been a humbling expeirence and a growing one. Before I would argue about a bad call or curse when I was frustrated nomatter who was around. Now I have more self control and respect. These kids need an example on and off the court. We haven't won a game yet and we are well into the season, but that's okay. As long as the kids are learning and enjoying it, that is all that matters. The key is not to get to frustrated with them or give up on them, because that is the last thing they need. I had a coach say to me once, " The reason I yell at you is because I know you can do better, and if I didn't yell at you and just let you continue to mess up then that means I don't care about you enough to correct you." (Coach McDowell) I work with our big guys, the forwards and centers. Being a somewhat small guy (5'8 with shoes on and 170+ lbs) I move better than these guys, which all of our big men are as tall if not taller than I am and they are in Middle School, so it is important to realize that they have not developed into their bodies yet. When they cant get something right at practice I slow down the pace and walk them throught it. If you ask and obey God then he will do the same, walk with you through life. God is beside you. You just have to decide if you want to walk with him or walk in front of him. If you choose to walk in front of him, then how can he lead and walk with you?

#4 and #54 are no longer with us

Use your gifts and talents in life for others. In basketball you want to finish first. In life you should want to finish third. God, Others, then Yourself.

Funny NBA logos

The NBA logo has so much history and is probably the most recognized logo in all of sports. If a friend were to ask you "who is the player on the NBA logo?" and you didn't know, then you probably shouldn't consider yourself a serious NBA fan. So to make the logo relevant to a new generation of fans, we threw out a few options...

7. The GO-Hawk - We'd loved this hair, but starting out your first and entire season on the bench after being chosen #1 overall pretty much knocks this one from ever receiving consideration for an NBA logo.

6. The Game Winner - As Blazer fan this would be the most amazing logo ever, but unlikely seeing as he's only in his 3rd year. Although the shot he made that was inspiration behind this logo definitely warrants some consideration right?

5. The Flying Miller Lite - Fighting is definitely not an option if becoming a logo has crossed your mind. Oh, and getting hit by beer cups also isn't.

4. The Superman - Oh Superman.

3. The Can You Digg it! - Maybe someday, but the quotes, fortunately unfortunately will probably last longer than this silhouette. Those were the years of a lot of hatred.

2. The Defensive Stopper -Heck no. This would be a disgrace to the game.

1. The Future - I think we may have a winner. Can't you see this happening somewhere in the future? Class act, ambassador to bowling, and one great ball player.

Your thoughts? Any of these players stand a chance at making the logo?
